Simplest Form By Mr. Bales
3
Objective ZBy the end of this lesson, you will be able to write a fraction in simplest form. ZStandard 4NS1.5 - Students will explain different interpretations of fractions, for example, …..division of whole numbers by whole numbers; explain equivalence of fractions.
4
Introduce ZSome fractions are easer to understand than others. ZWhat is 1/4 of a dollar? ZWhat is 2/8 of a dollar? ZThese are actually the same amounts. It’s just that 1/4 is a lot easier to understand since its in simplest form.
5
You Try ZOn your desk you will find some money. You need 4 quarters and 10 dimes. ZHow much is 1/2 of a dollar? ZHow much is 5/10 of a dollar? ZHow much is 2/4 of a dollar? ZThese fractions ( 1/2, 5/10, and 2/4) are equivalent fractions.
6
Teach ZThere are 12 questions on a quiz. Andrew got 8 out of 12 or 8/12 of the questions correct. ZWhat is 8/12 in simplest form?
7
Simplest Form ZSimplest form is when the numerator and denominator have no common factor other than one. ZIn other words, no other factor than 1 can go into the numerator and denominator evenly.

Simplest Form vs. NOT Simplest Form ZFractions in Simplest Form Z1/2 Z2/3 Z3/4 Z3/7 Z5/8 ZFractions NOT in Simplest Form Z2/4 Z4/6 Z8/10 Z8/12 Z16/24

Example ZImportant - To change a fraction into its simplest form, you can divide both the numerator and the denominator by the greatest common factor (the biggest number that goes into both.) ZWrite 8/12 in simplest form. ZStep 1 - Find the common factors. ZFactors of 8: 1, 2, 4, 8 ZFactors of 12: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 ZCommon Factors: 1, 2, and 4 ZStep 2 - Divide the greatest common factor, 4. Z8 ÷ 4 = 2 12 ÷ 4 = 3 The numbers 2 and 3 have no common factor other than 1.
10
Another Example ZYou can also change a fraction into simplest form by dividing by common factors (may not be the greatest factor) ZStep 1 - Write a fraction. Z18 24 Divide by common factors. 18 = 18 ÷ 2 = 9 24 24 ÷2 12 9 = 9 ÷ 3 = 3 12 12 ÷ 3 = 4 A common factor of 18 and 24 is 2. A common factor of 9 and 12 is 3.
