Fractions Revision Lesson
3
EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS Fraction that is worth the same as another fraction but looks different. Eg. 1 = 2 2 4 Useful for canceling fractions(simplest form) and addition/subtraction.
4
How to change fractions (Do the same to top and bottom) x4 2 = 8 5 20 x4
5
Top heavy or Improper Fractions Fractions which have a larger top (numerator) than bottom (denominator) Have a value of more than 1 Can switch from mixed number to top heavy fraction easily Useful for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
6
Addition/Subtraction Denominators must be the same. Use equivalent fractions to change if necessary Check to see if your answer will simplify.
7
3 1 - 2 3 2 4 Change to top heavy 7 - 11 2 4 Make denominators the same 14 - 11 4 4 Subtract numerators 3 4
8
What about addition? Exactly the same process as subtraction but add instead.
9
How do we multiply? No. Not that sort of multiplying.
10
3 1 x 1 3 3 4 Make into top heavy fractions 10 x 7 3 4 Multiply across the top and then the bottom 70 12 Cancel down your answer 5 10 = 5 5 12 6
11
What about division? The same as multiplication except……..
12
For one sneaky bit 1 2 / 3 5 3 6 Change to top heavy fractions 5 / 23 3 6 Instead of dividing, ‘flip’ the divisor and multiply 5 x 6 = 30 3 23 69 Simplify by canceling 30 = 10 69 23
13
That’s all folks!
