The Quest for answers A man named Siddhartha questioned Hinduism He wondered why there was so much pain in the world He traveled India looking for answers

The Buddha Finds Enlightenment Siddhartha fasted-went for days without food He meditated He wandered India for 6 years

Buddha Siddhartha realized that suffering comes from 3 things…. 1. Wanting things 2. Wanting to keep things 3. Disliking things we have Siddhartha was called “Buddha”

Teachings of Buddha Believed people should act morally and treat others well

Teachings of Buddha cont… Buddha came up with the 4 Noble Truths 1. Suffering and being unhappy is part of life 2. People cause own suffering because they want things they can’t have 3. People can reach “Nirvana” - state of peace 4. People need to follow the 8 Fold Path

8 Fold Path 1.Right Thought-believe 4 Noble Truths 2.Right Intent-be good and kind 3.Right Speech-don’t lie or gossip 4.Right Action-don’t harm others 5.Right Livelihood-don’t do work that would harm 6.Right Effort-prevent evil, and do good 7.Right Mindfulness-control your feelings 8.Right Concentration-meditate

Buddha Challenged Hinduism Buddha told people not to sacrifice animals Everyone has to work on themselves- priests can’t help Thought people who died didn’t reach nirvana and were reincarnated until they did Opposed the caste system-many lower classes followed lower classes followed

Buddhism Spreads in India and beyond India People spread Buddha’s ideas in India Asoka built many temples ad schools in India He sent missionaries to other kingdoms in Asia Buddhism spread to central Asia, Persia, Syria, Egypt, China, Korea and Japan Today Buddhism is strongest in China

A Split with Buddhism Many Buddhist started to disagree on beliefs and practices Formed 2 branches of Buddhism-Theravada and Mahayana Theravada followed Buddha’s exact teachings Mahayana believed people could interpret Buddha’s teachings to reach Nirvana Mahayana has largest following
