1 Chemical Reactions

2 Lab Prep Purpose: 1.To be able to recognize reactants and products in a chemical reaction. 2. To be able to identify types of reactions. 3. To be able to write a word equation for a reaction. 4. To be able to write a balanced equation for a reaction

3 Hypothesis Part A I think the steel nail is a _____________ Reaction.
(synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement)

4 Hypothesis Part B I think the Baking Soda is a _____________ Reaction.
(synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement)

5 Hypothesis Part C I think the Copper Sulfate is a _____________ Reaction. (synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement)

6 Materials Aluminum Foil Vinegar Goggles Matches Tongs
Baking Soda (NaHCO3) Test Tube &Holder Wood Splint 2 Iron Nails (Fe) Copper Sulfate (CuSO4) String

7 Procedure Part A: Place a nail in a beaker with water and let stand for 3 days. At the end of three days observe the changes to the nail. What has developed on the nail?

8 Part B: Put 10 ml of vinegar into a test tube. Put 2 g of baking soda into the test tube. Light a match and put it into the mouth of the test tube Make observations of the reaction

9 Part C 1. Place a nail into the CuSO4. 2. Let the nail rest for 30 minutes. 3. Observe the reaction

10 Observations Part A Iron Nail in water Before After Part B Baking Soda
Part C Copper Sulfate

11 Questions Part A How many reactants in a synthesis reaction? How many products are there? Oxygen was a reactant in part A where did it come from? Write a word equation for the reaction. Iron + Oxygen yields Iron Oxide 4. Write a balanced equation using symbols for this reaction.

12 Part B Questions 5. Is the product of a synthesis reaction an element or compound? 6. How many products are in a decomposition reaction? How many reactants? 7. Write a word equation for this reaction. Sodium Bicarbonate  SodiumCarbonate + Carbon Dioxide 8. Write a balanced equation for this reaction. 9. Is the reactant that decomposes an element or a compound?

13 Part C Questions 10. What element causes the copper sulfate solution to change color? What element causes the nail to change color? 11. Describe the exchange of metals that takes place in this reaction? 12. Write a word equation for this reaction. Iron + Copper Sulfate yields Copper + Iron Sulfate 13. Write a balanced equation for this reaction. 14. Are the products of a single displacement reaction elements or compounds?

14 Diagram: Draw one diagram for each part. Analysis: What happened? (For each part) Why? (For each part)
