Small farmers, artisans and some wealthy plantation owner support Jefferson’s Democratic Republicans. Merchants and manufactures from New York and Boston support Federalists. Federalists want strong central government Newspapers take sides: Great influence on Americans because people opinion influenced by language in editorials. Emotional attacks created party rivalry.

Political Parties played major role in election of Washington’s successor Demo-Republicans supported Jefferson, with Aaron Burr for Vice President Federalists support John Adams and Thomas Pinckney for VP Electoral Votes decide, but based on highest totals for each person. Adams is President and Jefferson next highest vote, so he is VP. Leas to tensions/distrust.
