1 Literary Terms Jordyn Kogler Ms Curtis AP English/Period 5

2 Antecedent antecedent is the phrase, word, or clause that is referred to by a pronoun. Examples: -President Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg address in 1863. (the pronoun “his” refers to President Lincoln, so President Lincoln would be the antecedent) - Mark called Mary’s house all day, but she never answered the phone. (Mary would be the antecedent being replaced by the pronoun “she”) - Taylor drove to the store in her car. (Taylor is the antecedent replaced by the pronoun “her”) - Demi Lovato was singing her song.

3 Antithesis Antithesis is the exact opposite or contrast of ideas. Examples: -It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. -It’s black and white. -Leaving my hometown was bitter-sweet.

4 Aphorism Aphorism is a short saying embodying a general truth. Examples: -The commonly used phrase “less is more” is an aphorism. - “A watched pot never boils.” - “If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got” (Jackie “Moms” Mabley).

5 Apostrophe Apostrophe is a figure of speech in which an nonexistent person or thing is addressed as it they’re present and/or capable of understanding Examples: - “Blue moon, you saw me standing alone...”(Lorenz Hart). -Twinkle twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are. - “Then come, sweet death, and rid me of this grief”(Queen Isabella in Edward II by Christopher Marlowe).

6 Atmosphere Atmosphere is the mood established in literary work that is often created through the setting and foreshadowing. Examples: -It was a cold, dark night, and while Emma was walking, she could hear faint footsteps following her. -On a warm summers day, while the breeze was blowing through Jamie’s hair, she felt that her luck was about to change. -On the windy, dark mountain road, there was no way to see, no matter what direction he faced.
