Implementation 2009-2010 Pilot program O approximately 2 classes per school 2010-2011 Implementation grades 3-5, 6 2011-2012 Implementation grades K-2

Instructional Changes

Changes in Instruction O Conceptual instruction based on the recommendations of the National Mathematics Panel and the Common Core Standards O Visual representations for interactive learning and pictorial representations to increase student connections O Stress not only procedural skill but also conceptual understanding, to make sure students are learning and absorbing the critical information they need to succeed at higher levels

O Algebra integrated into regular lessons for practical applications O Conceptual understanding, computational fluency, problem solving skills O Teaching for understanding is crucial for computational fluency and long term retention O Apply mathematical skills to many situations O Allows for differentiation to meet the needs of all learners

Professional Development O Year long implementation training provided by Pearson, pilot teachers, and Math Specialists O Training for Support Staff in program O In-service through Math Committee meetings O Monthly meetings with K-2 teachers in Common Core and the continued change in instructional strategies necessary for Common Core

Teacher Examples Mrs. Kathy Hornberger and Mrs. Colleen Schaffer

Student thoughts

District Test Changes Miguel uses the number line below to show how much of his homework he has completed. 0 means none of his homework is done, 1 means the homework is done. What fraction of the homework is done?
