Biomarkers and Drug Discovery Angie Pannier Mathias Schubert Pat Dussault Surinder Batra

Charge: Your task is to develop core ideas/projects for an $8-10M ($1.25-1.5M per year for 5 years) NIH Center proposal. Specifically, you should consider the following questions

Briefly describe the core projects your group would design for the Center. Please dream big. Cancer diagnostics –Noninvasive Imaging-based (small molecules) Blood-borne (cellular or molecular targets) –Detection with nanoparticles and then novel characterization techniques (to determine presence of ligand) –Nanohybrid materials--Biomolecule capturing/filtering/microfluidics/readout techniques –Detection for proteins, miRNAs, small molecules Diagnostics/Disease Screening Center (broader than cancer)—” Nanohybrid Biomaterials for Diagnostics” –Screen for miRNAs –Sensitive RNA detection methods and probes –Sequencing –Profiles –Bioinformatics Personalized Medicine –Combine above with additional therapies

Identify the key faculty from both campuses to involve in these projects. Include their strengths. (UNMC on next slide) UNL FacultyStrengths Pat Dussualt David Hage Mathias Schubert Angie Pannier Eva Bachman-Schubert Ravi Saraf Yongfeng Lu Rebecca Lai Hendrik Viljoen Yuris Dzenis Ming Han Srivatsan Kidambi Dennis Alexander Greg Bashford Shadi Othman Jung Yul Lim

Identify the key faculty from both campuses to involve in these projects. Include their strengths. UNMC Faculty Strengths Surinder Batra Tony Hollingsworth Aaron Sasson Michelle Ouetllet John Davis Steve Remenga Subodh Lele Hamid Band Vimla Band Kay Wagner Ken Cowan CDDN (Sasha Kabanov and Tatiana Bronich) Sanjay Singh Howard Gendelman Ken Bayles

Identify external academic partners & expertise or equipment resources/strengths that are needed to accomplish these projects. Better communication between campuses (and PIs) Expand nanofabrication facilities (microelectronics, prototyping) Microfluidics faculty member New graduate program

List potential industry/foundation partners (think broadly) and what they would contribute. Include reasons why they would be interested. J.A. Woollam Co. LICOR P & G Abbott PanCan American Cancer Society All disease specific….

Describe how you would link the Center to other campus resources. Links to CDDN, NCMN, MR-SEC, Center for Biotechnology, Nebraska Gateway for Nutrigenomics, UNMC Bioinformatics, Center for Neurosciences, Genetics Center

Increase communication between campuses (intracampus) “Stanford BioDesign” analogy Poster Sessions Research talks Biologists/clinicians: What are the problems? Engineers: What are the tools?
