1 Workshop on the Use of Ethernet as a Fieldbus CERN, 28 September 2001 Use of Ethernet in the control systems of the cooling and ventilation infrastructure D. Blanc, M. C. Morodo ST-CV

2 ST-CV Control Systems Communication requirements for the LHC era:The strategy: To cope with the geographical dispersion of the CV processes ---> Networking To integrate the existing heterogeneous environment ---> Openness The retained control system solution -1998-: Ethernet A fully industrial standard control system architecture is taken as a reference Industrial approach For the first time, a unique network solution at all the control system layers Ethernet D. Blanc, M. C. Morodo ST-CVWorkshop on the use of Ethernet as a fieldbus, 28 Sept 2001

3 Experiments Accelerators Technical infrastructure Control rooms D. Blanc, M. C. 4 Implementation: Present status Reference Projects: PS LHC SPS LEP-LHC Tunnel D. Blanc, M. C. Morodo ST-CVWorkshop on the use of Ethernet as a fieldbus, 28 Sept 2001 n CoolingCompleted  25 hosts n TOF, ATLAS, CMS, ALICE Collaborations with Experiments: n VentilationIn preparation  20 hosts n Ventilation of surface buildings n Ventilation of ATLAS & CMS experimental zones n Cooling of ATLAS & CMS experimental zones In progress (about 50 %) Ready to start In preparation  30 hosts n CoolingStarting  15 hosts Altogether more than 150 hosts distributed over all the CERN sites

5 Conclusions n CERN Technical (Services) network has shown to fit the ST-CV control system communication requirements –Very high availability and reliability –Network installation, administration and maintenance services Performance Evaluation: Thank you Future Evolution: n Industrial control systems’ manufacturers are increasing their development on Ethernet TCP/IP –The use of Ethernet shall be extended even more n Field communication for distributed periphery –Industrial fieldbuses (Profibus DP, FIP norm) keep their leadership for some more years yet D. Blanc, M. C. Morodo ST-CVWorkshop on the use of Ethernet as a fieldbus, 28 Sept 2001
