Pass messages from one person to another “up or down” the chain No communication among group’s members except for talking to the person or persons next to each other Example: Telephone Game, Government, CEOs

There is a central person through whom all messages are sent. This network depends almost entirely on that central person. Group is strong if central person is strong leader Example: Teacher in Classroom

“completely connected” Everyone has an equal opportunity to communicate with everyone else in group No one is in control of all information Leader may be elected Leader may arise No force for anyone into leadership role Example: Party planning, lunchroom

When you are a part of a small group trying to solve a problem or complete a task, you need to think about what network would work best for your group. Consider the following: Size of the group Time limit Difficulty of task Physical closeness of group members

Group decisions can be made by: Voting: Majority rules Everyone gets a chance to voice their opinion Compromise: Come to an agreement Results may not be totally pleasing to all members “You get one, I get one” mentality

Consensus: Group Decision issues are fully aired, all members feel they have been adequately heard, in which everyone has equal power and responsibility Unanimous decision An authority : One person decides allows the stronger, faster, better, louder person to decide
