Direct Quotes How to embed and cite

1. Find your source  Remember to follow the guidelines for appropriate sources  Skim the article for pertinent information that supports your topic

Topic Choice: Michael Jordan 1. Preliminary Research 2. Find key information that answers the questions on my Topic/Big Questions Worksheet 1. Google – Choose Wikipedia, or a general information site 2. Cross reference with a credible Source 2. Underline SIGNIFICANT statements that clearly support your thesis/topic sentences

Wikipedia Michael Jordan is more than just a great basketball player. All of the awards and wins ARE important, but the fact that something in his life has made a lasting impact is much more important. In this case, the key word I noticed right away is INSTRUMENTAL. Although these dates are 1980s-1990s, I know that his impact is still important. Key dates for my worksheet may include lifespan. For Michael Jordan, other key dates are when he was drafted, and his first NBA game.

Cross Reference with a Credible Source

2. Inserting the quote in your paper  Copy the quote word for word. Be sure to retain the same punctuation.  You do not have to use the entire sentence; use only the part that is relevant to your paper.  You will need to embed the quote in your sentence using quotation marks. “ “

Example of a direct quote that is embedded correctly Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by a "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (263). Blue = words from the writer “ ” = signifies that the words inside are borrowed from another person Red = (Direct Quote) Borrowed Words Let’s look back at our Michael Jordan information. This is an internal citation. We will learn the way to correctly format your internal citations later.

Michael Jordan’s basketball skills not only entertained basketball lovers and game viewers, but “ inspired an entire generation of children all over America” and now the world to match his “greatness”.

Cite the source  Cite the author and the page number in the parenthesis following the quote.  If the author is mentioned preceding the quote, only put the page number.  Smith claims that the desire “be like Mike” leads to “false hopes in children” (Page#). In this example, Smith is the author of the article, so there is no need to recite his name in the internal citation.  This leads to “direct quote” (Author page#).

Michael Jordan’s basketball skills not only entertained basketball lovers and game viewers, but “ inspired an entire generation of children all over America” and now the world to match his “greatness”(Jordan’s Effect). I had to add an internal citation or I am plagiarizing and will fail my paper. In this case, there was no author of the article. The next slide will explain how to correctly cite this information.

If the source has no author…  When a source has no known author, use a shortened title of the work instead of an author name. Place the title in quotation marks if it's a short work (e.g. articles) or italicize it if it's a longer work (e.g. plays, books, TVshows, entire websites) and provide a page #.  This region has "more readily accessible climatic data to monitor and study environmental change" ("Impact of Global Warming" 6).

Add modifications if necessary  If you add a word or words in a quotation, you should put brackets around the words to indicate that they are not part of the original text.  Example:  Jan Harold Brunvand, in an essay on urban legends, states, "some individuals [who retell urban legends] make a point of learning every rumor or tale" (78). Many times, you will need to use Brackets to get rid of pronouns (it, she, he) or to fix verb tenses. If you use a direct quote and need to add a word so that your sentence is grammatically correct, that is OKAY!

Omitting Words  If you omit a word or words from a quotation, you should indicate the deleted word or words by using ellipsis marks, which are three periods (... ) preceded and followed by a space. For example:  In an essay on urban legends, Jan Harold Brunvand notes that "some individuals make a point of learning every recent rumor or tale... and in a short time a lively exchange of details occurs" (78). The writer needed to chop up their sentence because there were insignificant parts in the sentence.

Lastly, remember to place every source you use in the Works Cited
