SolidWorks was founded in 1993, by several CAD industry veterans, with the vision to deliver the power of 3D mechanical design software to everyone.
In less than two years, SolidWorks introduced the first powerful 3D mechanical CAD software available for a native Windows® environment.
In 1997, SolidWorks was acquired by France-based Dassault Systemes, a global leader in the marketing for product lifecycle management (PLM) software, for stock valued at over $310 million.
A major milestone occurred in 2000, when less than 5 years after selling their first seat of software, SolidWorks sold it’s 100,000 seat of software. Within three short years, that milestone was more than doubled when SolidWorks sales surpassed a quarter million seats.
SolidWorks complemented its existing product line with analysis and workgroup PDM (product data management0 software through acquisitions of SRAC in 2001 and Design Source in 2002.
