1
Oral Contraception By Jeannie Herrero
2
The Female Reproductive System Composed of the uterus, the ovaries, and the fallopian tubes Every month the ovaries release eggs This release is triggered by the body’s need for two hormones Estrogen and Progesterone These hormones cause a lining of blood to build on the uterine walls
3
Continued The lining is there to build a safe area for a possible fertilized egg to grow into a baby Oral contraception gives the body Estrogen and Progesterone via a pill or a patch Because the body receives the hormones via one of these ways the ovaries don’t get the signal to release an egg No egg=no possible fertilization=no baby
4
What else oral contraceptives do Thicken mucus found in reproductive organs=harder for sperm to “swim” through Thin uterine lining=makes it hard for fertilized egg to implant and grow in uterine wall
5
How to get oral contraception So easy-go to any local gynecologist or center for sexual advising/safety Examples: Planned Parenthood, Bread and Roses, and our very own Infirmary Receive a gynecological exam and get a prescription You can choose between a pill or a patch You can get a monthly pack of pills or patch at a local drugstore
6
Continued Prices range from $30-$50 a month Discounts are available for students and insurance companies often cover portions of the charges
7
How to take the contraception Even easier-The pill is taken everyday at the same time The patch is used once a month and can be hidden in hard to find places It won’t fall off in the water while showering or swimming in the beach
8
Side effects from contraception Reduce premenstrual symptoms=guys you won’t deal with PMS Reduce menstrual symptoms=girls no cramps Increase breast size=good for both sexes Weight gain-only 3-5 pounds (nothing compared to 25-35 gained in pregnancy) Nausea-solved by various different varieties
9
How effective the pill actually is About 95-99% effective at preventing pregnancy Other reasons it is great Doesn’t ruin the moment=both No need for a condom=guys that’s good Better periods and no worries=girls that’s great
10
Conclusion Pill works by preventing ovaries from releasing eggs It is very easy to gain access to Various centers in Gainesville Discounts available for students Easy to take Set a daily alarm Hide in a discrete place Very effective in preventing pregnancy
11
Conclusion 28 million women get pregnant every year-46% of those are unplanned Put a stop to the many problems that come with sex by promoting oral contraception and informing everyone about its success
