Mystery Sports Drinks Explore p. 17

Entry Task Turn to a new page. Put today’s date at the top of the page. Put the thread title “Mystery Sports Drinks” next to the date. Write the learning target – I can write a scientifically testable question to guide an investigation into sports drinks. Update your TOC Answer the question: How are sports drinks different from energy drinks?

How do scientists gather evidence? So far… we have learned about evidence we have learned how evidence is used to support logical explanations and conclusions (inference) But, how do scientists gather evidence? Read Introduction on p. 17

Part 1: Asking a Testable Question Read Process & Procedure Intro p. 17 What do you already know about sports drinks? What questions would you ask about a mysterious sports drink before you would drink it? Class discussion: What kinds of things could you do to answer each of the questions on the board? Which of the questions can be answered based on opinion? Which can be answered by scientific testing? What kinds of tests could you perform?

Day 2: Entry Task What are the criteria for a scientifically testable question? The question center on objects, organisms, and events in the natural world The question connects to science concepts (facts) rather than opinions, feelings, or beliefs The question can be investigated through experiments or observations The question leads to gathering evidence and using data to explain how the natural world works.

Part 1: Asking a Testable Question When conducting scientific inquiry, you need to know what information/knowledge already exists about your topic. Read “A Powerful Thirst” p. 18-19 Let’s take notes together using Cornell Notes Make sure you can explain the following terms: homeostasis, diuretics, carbohydrates, electrolytes Complete Stop & Think #1-3 p. 20

S&T p. 20 #1-3 Now, let’s see how complete your notes are. Can you answer these questions using only your notes? 1. What ingredients in a sports drink can benefit an athlete? Describe what makes them beneficial. Water – necessary for the proper functioning of the human body. Without water the body cannot maintain homeostasis (balance). Carbohydrates – provide calories (energy) to replace the ones that were burned during exercise. Also help with water absorbtion. Electrolytes – help with water absorbption.

S&T p. 20 #1-3 Now, let’s see how complete your notes are. Can you answer these questions using only your notes? 2. How could you find out if the mystery sports drink contains any of these beneficial ingredients? What tests could you perform? We could test for the presence of water, carbohydrates and electrolytes.

S&T p. 20 #1-3 Now, let’s see how complete your notes are. Can you answer these questions using only your notes? 3. How could you test the sports drink to find out how much of the beneficial ingredients are solid and how much are liquid? We could use evaporation to remove the water, and then only the solids (carbohydrates and salts) will be left behind.
