KNOW WHERE YOU STAND - Know why YOU were hired. - Ensure faculty understand your research. - Obtain annual reviews, be clear on their meaning. - Solicit honest input from your mentor & faculty in your research area.

SOME KEYS TO SUCCESS - Time management (block off time to work). - Develop independent research program (can be balance of own & team work). - Be proactive and take responsibility: contact mentors/Chair for meetings. - Request help: reading drafts, introductions to key people in field.

LEARN WHAT’S AVAILABLE Financial assistance: -RASAs, ADVANCE seed grants, Young Investigator Awards. Departmental support: - Reduced teaching & service loads. - TAs or RAs. - Funding for conferences.
