Objective –The student will learn what happened during Salem Witch Trials. What do you already know about witches?
3
Witches are “evil” people who work for the devil. People with warts, pimples and moles were suspected. Witches usually have imps so usually people with a lot of pets were accused. Witches were thought to create thunder, sink ships, and kill sheep. Baaaaaa why me?
5
On Sunday’s church meeting the girls called out silly things. That is what started it all. NOBODY COULD INTERUPT A CHURCH SERVICE EXCEPT FOR THE DEVIL. The two girls accused poor Tituba. Then the slave confessed that she flied on a broom. How nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
6
When the girls realized what they have done, it was too late. People were accusing each other. The girls couldn’t tell the truth because it was too late. The girls also probably liked calling out in church meetings and goofing around.
7
A person complained on a “witch”. The accused person was then arrested and put in jail. The witch was inspected and put on trail. The only hope for a person on the trial was that the judge would not sentence him or her to death.
8
The person claimed to be a witch was tested, usually pricked with pins ( the pricking was to find witch marks). Another way of testing was to read the bible. Beware if you do any of these things you could be suspected as a witch, such as singing, reading, and spending time by yourself. The judge made the decision and the sentence was carried out. The sheriff hanged the “witches” as the sentence said.
9
In 1693 the Salem Witch Trials ended with one mistake. Somebody accused Revenderes Hale’s wife. After this nobody ever accused anybody. The colony paid money to the families of the victims of the Salem Witch Hunt.
