Status and possibilities for the irradiation facility in the PS East Hall Michael Moll, Maurice Glaser 10 March 2010 – IRRAD Working Group - some notes for discussion -
2
CERN PS East Hall - Irradiation Facilities 24 GeV/c protons T7 & T8 beam lines in East Area Proton irradiations Direct exposure to 24 GeV/c protons (IRRAD1, IRRAD3, IRRAD5) Low intensity radiation field of backscattered particles (SEU and Dosimeter testing) (IRRAD6) Neutron (mixed field) irradiations Mixed field produced in cavity after carbon (50cm) iron (30cm) lead (5cm) ‘target’ (IRRAD2)
3
Summary of present beam properties Proton irradiation facility 24 GeV/c protons (in spills of ~ 2 10 11 p over 400 ms), ~ 2 x 2 cm 2 beam spot, flux: ~ 1 - 5 10 13 p cm -2 h -1 Shuttle system (10x10x20 cm 3 ) and irradiation tables/boxes for bigger objects Neutron irradiation field complex irradiation field dominated by neutrons, flux: ~ 2 10 7 n cm -2 s -1 ( E n > 1 MeV ) at 50 cm position

CERN PS Facilities – Operation 2009 Operation in 2009 (M.Glaser) -- only proton facility operated 142 days of proton beam to facility 431 objects irradiated 337 dosimeter measurements performed (mainly spectrometry of Al foils) Most complex irradiations 12 CMS ECAL & Crystal Clear scintillating crystals (get highly activated) ATLAS silicon sensors for SLHC (cooling to low temperatures during irradiation) Optical link system R&D for SLHC (system in operation during irradiation) Main part of irradiations performed for ATLAS, CMS, LHCb RD39, RD41, RD50, RADMON Operation in 2010 (M.Glaser) expect about 150 days of operation (as in 2009) 3 weeks of pion beam at the PSI (~280 MeV/c.) + 1 week of setup

M.Glaser, 19th DT coordination meeting (PS-Irrad & GIF) 20/8/2009 Example: 8/09 ATLAS optical links LHC Experiments Atlas Upgrade (Ohio University, K.K. Gan) IRRAD1 IRRAD3
6
Participants in upgrade activities M.Glaser & M.Moll (less than 10% FTE each) 2009: Fabio Rivero : Student, 4 months, working on general facility services (funded by WP7) Activities Participation in CERN wide ‘Irradiation Facilities Working Group’ and in particular evaluation of future hadron irradiation facilities (see http://www.cern.ch/irradiation-facilities )http://www.cern.ch/irradiation-facilities Planning and construction of new irrad. tables and cold box systems (to be continued in 2010) 2010 WP7 funding for student (8 months) Finalization of irradiation table systems Re-evaluation of plans for future hadron irradiation facilities at CERN and in particular EAST HALL FACILITIES in light of last Chamonix Meeting outcome New plans for upgrade of injector complexes: no PS2; PS to be used for another 25 years, …. New timing for LHC upgrade: more time to set up proper irradiation facilities (??) Activities - Upgrade of Hadron Facilities Vortex cooling tested …. to be continued in 2010

M.Glaser & M.Moll, 6 th LHC Radiation Workshop, 31.11.2007 -9- Proposal for facility upgrade Present limitations and drawbacks Irradiation tables are located inside the beam line complex (primary zone) Access to primary zone needed to enter Very restricted space, Backscattered particles superimpose primary beam Personnel exposed to radiation (activated material around irradiation tables – e.g. magnets) Neutron facility parasitic to DIRAC Parasitic operation strongly limits flexibility Proton & Neutron facilities located in different beam lines Parallel operation of two facilities difficult Proton and Neutron facility ‘competing’ for beam Proposal: Proprietary beam line for irradiations Combine proton and neutron irradiation facilities in one beam line Increase space for irradiation areas (less background, less exposure to radiation of personnel) Place facility in secondary zone (outside beam line complex) Allow access with big objects to the neutron irradiation facility Requires termination of DIRAC experiment in T8 beam line slide from 2007

Remarks for discussion PS will be consolidated and continue to operate for many years Long term investments into irradiation facilities are justified again No visible end to operation of DIRAC Need to wait for DIRAC to stop dating data and dismantle (maybe years ahead to wait …?) Write a counter proposal to take over the DIRAC area ? East area will be restructured What will happen to the irradiation facilities ? Are we missing the opportunity for a proper planning of the facilities upgrade? Some funding might become available through the AIDA proposal Requested funds for the facilities: 0.5 Meuros (EU) + 1.5 Meuros (partners) Need to better communicated with EN to understand what kind of measures could be taken to increase the proton intensity in the irradiation facility … … How to do? … to be discussed today … Needs re-enforcement of man-power (and commitment) on PH side (for facilities operation or upgrade activities)
