1 STAAR Vocabulary 10 th Grade Kuczek-GHS-English II-2012

2 For 100 dollars… I need you to get me a kwiat. Too hard??? Ok… For 1000 dollars… Point to the pimpek.

3 Why was this hard?????

4 You didn’t have the right vocabulary to accomplish the task!!

5 Why?  If you don’t know the words how can you do what they are asking?  How can we solve that???  We will make a toolbox for STAAR testing Vocabulary.

6 How?  We are going to divide into teams to conquer this vocabulary.  Each group will get 10 words to define.  We are going to define it 3 ways…  Dictionary  Personal  Visual

7 Synopsis 1. a condensed statement or outline 2. A summary or overview.

8 Now  Get into a group of 4 and number off 1 to 4.  All Number 1’s go to the back corner by the door  All Number 2’s go to the front corner by the flag  All Number 3’s go to the front corner by the overhead screen  Al Number 4’s go to the back corner by my desk.

9 Group Work  You will be given 10 words that as a group you must look up in a dictionary, come up with a personal definition and visual definition. Each person in the group must have the same definitions and visual.

11 List #1  Make: to create  Understand: to know  Use: what an object is for  Contrast: difference between two objects  Evaluate: to figure out

12 List #2  Explain-to make clear  Organize- to form unity  Recognize- to identify  Relate- to connnect  Summarize- to make an overall statement

13 List #2  Write- to inscribe  Brainstorm- to think  Consult with others- to consider others  Critique- to examine  Decide- to choose

14 List #3  Defend: Give proof of your answer  Determine: Answer question  Differentiate: To put apart  Distinguish: Divide  Draw conclusions: Come up with answer

15 List #3  Edit: To improve  Follow: Do what you’re told  Formulate: Come up with a solution/answer  Give: Present with a gift  Listen: Pay attention

16 List #4  Modify: to change something  Participate: to be a part of something  Plan: to have an idea set out  Produce: to make or manufactor  Provide: to supply

17 List #4  Reflect: reflection, to look over  Revise: to edit or change  Spell: using letters or period of time  Structure: the making of something or what its made of  Synthesize: to be in order
