3  During the 1600s-1700s 13 colonies were formed:  1-Religious freedom from English Church (Protestant)  Called Puritans…wanted their church to be more pure  2- Expanding European empires/countries  3- Money from trading with other countries

4  New England Colonies  Massachusetts  Connecticut  New Hampshire  Rhode Island

5  Middle Colonies  Delaware  Pennsylvania  New York  New Jersey

6  Southern Colonies  Maryland  Virginia  North Carolina  South Carolina  Georgia

8  Where you lived influenced your way of life.  New England colonies:  fishing, timber and shipping.  Middle colonies:  farming  Southern colonies:  rice and tobacco  plantations for this cash crop  warm weather ideal for this.

9  Higher birth rates…greater population…more cities  Better transportation (boats, carriages)  Industry #1…controlled production of goods.

10  Geography/fear of Indians force close relations  Requires Public Education  Diversity of Agriculture  Forests for shipbuilding

12  Wide gap between rich and poor  Slaves were made to work the land  Few cities and poor transportation

13  Agriculture #1  Cash crops indigo, rice, and tobacco  Plantations so travel not as important  Everything you needed was on plantation site

15  Mayflower Compact  Signed by Pilgrims coming over on Mayflower ship from England.  Document stating they were still loyal to the King of England but wanted to have their own laws.

16  Town Meetings  Plymouth, MA.  Everyone comes together and votes on issues and make laws…still seen today!

17  Fundamental Orders of 1638  Document sent to England that would guarantee the existence of their current way of life  Did not want to live under England’s laws in America.  1 ST WRITTEN CONSTITUTION OF NEW WORLD

18  Jamestown, VA  Joint-Stock Colony  When wealthy English men put money together and invested in a trading company  Began to export tobacco to England

19  Plantation Systems  division of the land into smaller units under private ownership  tobacco, rice, sugar cane and cotton were labor intensive
