English Colonial Rule Mid 1600’s, English monarchy saw James II take throne away from Charles II. James II was forced out after trying to take back powers of Parliament and tighten royal control over colonies. 1688—Parliament took action. English Colonial Rule—cont. England saw North America as economic resource. Colonies provided England with _____ materials. Colonies and Rights Royal Colonies GA, MA, NH, NJ, NY, NC, SC, and VA. Britain directly ruled colonies. _____ appointed governor and council (upper house). Colonists elected assembly (lower house). Members of legislature acted as Britain told them, but conflicts arose mainly because of tax laws and trade restrictions. Voting Rights Voting rights granted to _____ men who owned property.
