+ A few statistics… 5.4 million students are currently classified as limited English proficient By 2025, one out of every four students are expected to be limited English proficient We know that a 2 nd language is best acquired through meaningful engagement rather than a set of grammatical rules to be mastered! (Gersten & Baker, 2000)

+ Four components of mastering a second language: 1. Speaking 2. Listening/Understanding 3. Reading 4. Writing Which two are most often used in a language? Speaking and Listening Which two do we most commonly teach in a classroom? Reading and Writing
