Organizer : FURE (Foundation for Underwater Research and Education) www.isrsubrace.org Location: Carderock Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Bethesda, Maryland Competition Dates: June 27 – July 1, 2011 Design Presentation Purpose: -to inspire students of the various engineering disciplines to delve into broad areas of underwater technology advancement and to provide them an educational experience that translates their theoretical knowledge into reality; -to foster advances in sub-sea vehicle hydrodynamic, propulsion, and life support systems; -to increase public awareness of the challenges faced by people who work in and explore the ocean depths.

Submarine Human Powered Submarine? Most Common Design Rational
3
Typical Design Results
4
Fastest Human Powered Land Vehicle? Over 83 mph / 133 kph Note: Air is also a fluid!
5
Typical Propeller Powered Vehicle in the fluid air?
7
All power is determined by the capability of a single person: The ergonomics of the vehicle impacts the amount of power available The efficiency of the propulsion and power transmission systems is critical to delivering the available torque to the propeller Design Observations This is a Human Powered Vehicle competition in water
8
The weight of the vehicle doesn’t matter, but entrained volume is critical: Design Observations F=m*a m= sub mass + added mass In a wet sub with a conventional hull, this added mass is significant, compared to the vehicle’s weight “The Yellow Rose of Texas” was engineered to minimize entrained water volume.

Lone Star Concepts Design Results Linear Drive System Dual Shaft Miter Gear Box (Commercial Items) 90 deg Miter Gear Box (Commercial Item) Structural Tube w/ Internal Drive Shaft for Propeller Assembly Mounting Ducted Propeller System

Design Revisions Our original design utilized additive manufacturing to rapid prototype a solid plastic hull The revised design called for a hull skeleton, covered by a low-friction skin. Many skins were considered: –Vinyl –neoprene –Leather –Duct tape –Paper mache (waterproof of course!) The thin wire mesh hull was chosen for several reasons: –Elimination of the entrained water mass –Biomimicry of shark skin –Ease of construction –Budget contraints
