Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory 108 year old biomedical and marine research institution - oldest in state Historically a seasonal institution with scientists from 65 institutions Dramatic growth since 2000 Now have 7 full-time scientific groups 1999 - 9 employees 2006 - 41 employees Federal funding: 0.5 - 6M Operating budget: 0.75 - 7.9M MISSION To promote research and education in the biology of marine organisms; to foster understanding and preservation of the environment; and to advance human health.

Research 21 year history of NIH Toxicology Center funding in Environmental Health Established nation’s first Center for Marine DNA Sequencing (sequencing of the skate and sea urchin genomes) Established nation’s first Center for Marine Functional Genomic Studies Development of the Comparative Toxicogenomics Database Two companies from discoveries at MDIBL
