By P6 Resilient Group 1: Constance Ng(1), Lee Teng-ya (2), Filbert Phang (16), Theodore Tong (24), Jeremy Xiao (26) Man and his Environment- Nanotechnology The good, the bad, and the future

The one example of development in science and technology that man brings about: Using nanotechnology to create Nanobots

Description:  Start from a few molecules, atoms  Built from base to top  Programming enables it to do anything

Description:  Nanobots-Might Cure Cancer  Powered by charged particles in our blood  Deliver correct dosage of medicine at the right time  Tracked via cameras, ultrasound signals and MRI machine  Tested out successfully-leaves good cells alone, works with other treatments

Description:  Immortality  Replace biological blood  Heal wounds immediately  Regrow limbs  Access backed-up memories & personalities  Changes human nature

Positive Impacts:  Less chance of mistakes made  -Less traumatic for patients  -Faster recovery for patients  -More accurate and faster operations

Negative Impacts: Humans:  Toxic nanoparticles cause lung injury Lab mice:  Breathe in nano-titanium dioxide  Die of DNA and chromosome damage

Negative Impacts: Nanobots-Small:  Cannot check  Malfunctioning Prevent escaping:  Require small, special hospital rooms  Patients cannot wander freely  Long, expensive hospital stays

Why should man bear responsibility towards the environment from which he draws his resources? Negatively affect Nature:  Toxic nanoparticles escape and harm living things  Cause animal mutation  Cause imbalance in nature Be responsible:  Does not deplete scarce resources

Is technology good or bad? Good, may be abused:  Nanobots might clot arteries instead of clearing them  People might act irresponsibly, thinking nanobots will cure. Handle with care
