What is Literacy? Literacy- the ability of a student to comprehend or decode information and to use, transform and create new information.

Text Literacy- skills to use text-based resources as a means to gather, interpret and communicate information. Computer Literacy- encompasses the skills and knowledge teachers need to select and use technology to enhances learning opportunities of their students.

Distance Learning Literacy- comprises three main components: designing and facilitating learning experiences, modeling and promoting learning and responsibility, and engaging in lifelong learning. Cyberlearing Literacy- knowledge and skills to be successful in the use of technology tools Visual Literacy- learned ability to interpret and create visual messages accurately.

Audio Literacy- skills to understand the role of hearing and listening in learning. Video Literacy- skills to understand and evaluate video messages and to create video that appropriately achieves the intended outcomes. Media Literacy- knowledge and skills able to interpret and produce a wide variety of media, including text, audio, visuals, and videos.

Dabbling- randomly adding technology tools to a few classrooms or library Doing old things in old ways- teachers display lecture notes in PowerPoint rather than using overhead transparences Doing old things in new ways- when a teacher uses 3D model to demonstrate the structure of a compound rather than drawling it on a chalkboard Doing new things in new ways- fully utilize the power of technology and media
