White Man’s Burden Take up the White Man's burden-- Send forth the best ye breed-- Go, bind your sons to exile To serve your captives' need; To wait, in heavy harness, On fluttered folk and wild-- Your new-caught sullen peoples, Half devil and half child. Take up the White Man's burden-- In patience to abide, To veil the threat of terror And check the show of pride; By open speech and simple, An hundred times made plain, To seek another's profit And work another's gain. Take up the White Man's burden-- The savage wars of peace-- Fill full the mouth of Famine, And bid the sickness cease; And when your goal is nearest (The end for others sought) Watch sloth and heathen folly Bring all your hope to nought. Take up the White Man's burden-- No iron rule of kings, But toil of serf and sweeper-- The tale of common things. The ports ye shall not enter, The roads ye shall not tread, Go, make them with your living And mark them with your dead. Take up the White Man's burden, And reap his old reward-- The blame of those ye better The hate of those ye guard-- The cry of hosts ye humour (Ah, slowly!) toward the light:-- "Why brought ye us from bondage, Our loved Egyptian night?" Take up the White Man's burden-- Ye dare not stoop to less-- Nor call too loud on Freedom To cloak your weariness. By all ye will or whisper, By all ye leave or do, The silent sullen peoples Shall weigh your God and you. Take up the White Man's burden! Have done with childish days-- The lightly-proffered laurel, The easy ungrudged praise: Comes now, to search your manhood Through all the thankless years, Cold, edged with dear-bought wisdom, The judgment of your peers.

“Dollar” Diplomacy: Origins Evolved from Roosevelt Corollary of the Monroe Doctrine US would intervene as necessary in the Latin America to maintain economic/political stability How to “intervene”? Invest in infrastructure (a canal, perhaps?) Use naval power as “big stick” to enforce the Corollary
23
“Dollar Diplomacy” President Taft believed that promoting American economic interests in Latin America (and around the world) would benefit everyone Theory was: If….the U.S. invests in LA plantations, railroads, etc. then… American businesses would profit AND Latin America/Asia would rise out of poverty & social disorder However… Latin American countries really became resentful of American investment
26
Why would the Americans want to build a canal in the region of the world highlighted below?
27
Panama Canal Built b/t 1880 and 1914 (long time to build) President Theodore Roosevelt was a big supporter of the canal He encouraged Panama and Colombia (two countries surrounding the canal) to negotiate a treaty regarding the canal Big for trade – Americans profited
28
Effects of Imperialism Positive: 1. New roads and railroads 2. Telegraph and postal systems united country 3. Irrigation systems improved farming (at least for the time being) 4. New medicines Negative: 1. Native resources go to European power 2. European goods replace local goods 3. Europeans try to replace native culture with their own (native culture dies out in some places) 4. Local economic systems disrupted often disrupting social institutions 5. Natives were treated unfairly, and often times harshly
