3 ALCOHOL/DRUG ABUSE AND NOT PRACTISING SAFER SEX

4 THE PROBLEMS RESULTING FROM ALCOHOL ABUSE Alcohol abuse Alcohol can cause many different problems that can disrupt a person’s life. It can lead to not controlling yourself, causing people to be irritable and making you do things which you wouldn’t normally think of. Health problems : Short-term effects include an upset stomach, diarrhea, lack of coordination, judgment, headaches, insomnia. Long-term effects include heart disease, cancer, infections, mental disorders (memory), depression. Social problems: Losing friends, losing jobs, child abuse, domestic violence, separation of family members, divorce. Signs and symptoms: Decreased attention span, lack of coordination and slurred speech Work Or School Problems: Arriving late, making more mistakes, losing jobs. Financial problems: It may make current money problems worse and cause new ones: having less money for food/clothing; neglecting to pay bills; and creating additional expenses i.e. extra medical costs, fines. Alcohol units: There’s a limit for women and for men. 1 unit of alcohol lasts for an hour. The limit for men is 3-4 units per day and the limit for women is 2-3 units per day.

5 THE PROBLEMS RESULTING FROM DRUG ABUSE Drug abuse: Drug s can cause many problems such as; Effect on parents Effect on family and work Criminal problems Medical problems Abused drugs: Prescription drugs Cocaine Heroine marijuana Caffeine Cannabis Ecstasy Hallucinogens Nicotine etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XR7HO axXY48 The Theories Of Addiction And Implications For Counselling (2015), states that genetic factors appear to play a role in people’s use of tobacco and other drugs (Madden & Heath, 2002).

6 THE PROBLEMS THAT MAY OCCUR IF SAFER SEX IS NOT PRACTISED Several kinds of sexually transmitted diseases: Gonorrhoea non-gonococcal urethritis non-specific urethritis (NSU) genital herpes virus genital warts (Condyloma acuminata) scabies (mites) urethral and vaginal infections the protozoan Trichomonas the yeast monilia vaginal infections caused by different organisms Social and emotional problems? Religious concerns? There are physical dangers of unsafe sex. One of them are STDs which are diseases and infections which pass through sexual contact. The most dangerous STD is HIV and AIDs. The other major danger is pregnancy. Having casual sex with someone that you do not want to raise children with is a risky business. Condoms and other devices, such as morning after pills and diaphragms, protect against unwanted pregnancy, but they are not 100%

7 THE STRATEGIES THAT CAN BE ADOPTED TO AVOID PRESSURES TO TAKE RISKS IN THESE AREAS Do not hang around with gangs and people who take alcohol and drugs Do not get influenced by friends Use barriers when having sex Do not get yourself into crimes If you are struggling and having problems instead of drinking heavily or taking drugs get some help
