How candidates are chosen – After candidates declare that they are running and fill their petition, parties must choose who will run Not all elections, just the major ones Primaries – Direct primary Members of a political party choose candidates to run for office Used often

Elections Two types of direct primaries – Closed primary Voters must be registered as a party member and may vote in only in that party’s primary – Open primary Voters do not need to be a part of a political party to vote May only vote in one party’s primary

Elections Voting – General Election Voters make final decision about candidates Who ever gets the most votes wins Electoral college – In order to vote you must be registered Each state does it different Vote in your district polling place Why Vote?
