We Are On the Same Page, Right? CASA Webinar August 18, 2015

Picture THIS… You work for an established nonprofit One day a letter arrives that changes everything A transformational estate gift Endowment quadruples From comfortable existence to an abundance of resources Do all you want to do, and plan for growth…and there’s money left over.
4
Would you want to work for this organization ?
5
This is our story… 15 years ago, Texas Baptist Children’s Home received that letter…containing news of a $55M bequest. The word “transformational” seems insufficient to describe how our world changed. Our board and leadership took several steps: Reorganization for growth and liability protection Created our own Foundation to manage the endowment and make grants Embarked on a planned growth strategy. Obviously very exciting times!
6
15 Years Later… From a $xM organization serving 3,800 people annually to a $13.5M organization serving 18,000+ people annually.
7
So what’s the downside? Over the initial years of the new structure Development reported how much $$ we believed we could raise Program developed a budget Foundation closed the shortfall, and banked the unused earnings.
8
Everything was great….until? Program Fundraising Endowment
9
Eventually… Our Foundation said “We can’t bank roll the whole operation any longer.” Everyone needs to pull together! What began as wringing of hands has become a great joy to all!
10
Our experience represents a national trend… This study reveals that many nonprofit organizations are stuck in a vicious cycle that threatens their ability to raise the resources they need to succeed. Source: CompassPoint.org

“Organizations need to make fundamental changes in the way they lead and resource fund development in order to create the cultures and systems that support fundraising success. Fundraising can’t be a priority for just one individual. It has to be a priority, and a shared responsibility, for the board, the executive director and the staff alike.” Linda Wood – Haas Fund, partner in the study

STARRY Nurtures Children, Strengthens Families and Restores Hope. Panelists Richard Singleton – Executive Director Elizabeth Muenzler – Dir. of Development Gina Young – Administrative Assistant
13
Program vs. Development: A Competition Many Executive Directors come from program background Program staff provide facts and figures Development staff stay out of the way and just “go find the money.” Worked great as long as there was plenty of $$$ When the $$$ picture changed, WE needed to change
14
Program vs. Development: A Combination A revolutionary NEW approach that empowered teamwork, synergy and collaboration What changed: Stories instead of STATS Built a Team instead of Building Fences Pulling together instead of tug-o-war
15
Program vs. Development: A Collaboration Now we dream BIG, instead of settling for sameness Teamwork, Support, Collaboration Shared Experience, Shared Trials, Shared Celebrations We enjoy being on the journey together and we look forward to fundraising!
16
A New Approach? We used a specific model, but we’re not here to promote the model...just to promote the concept of working together to accomplish more…and have MORE FUN! Any agency can accomplish many of these things without employing our model. It’s about a new attitude and a spirit of cooperation.
