Topic: Gender and Spending Listening Strategy: - Recognizing language that signals: 1. The main topic of a lecture 2. The “big picture” (main points) of a lecture Note-taking Strategy: - Writing key words and ideas of a lecture.

Preparing to listen Background knowledge. Before entering a lecture, if possible, take time to build background knowledge about the topic. How can we do this? - Read the text book (or other readings) - Discuss the topic - Think about your own experience with the topic - Do your own research on the topic

Preparing to listen Background knowledge. - Building background knowledge helps prepare you: - Directs your brain’s attention to the topic. - Let’s you relate any knowledge you already have to the topic. - Let’s you think about words and phrases that are related to the topic.

Preparing to listen Background knowledge. - This is also called “activation”. You are activating your mind so you can devote more attention to the topic of the lecture. Often, reading the course textbook is the best Activation method for understanding a lecture.

Note Taking Tip 1: Only write the most important words. You do not have time to write a word-for-word transcript of a lecture. You do not memorize every word you hear in a conversation. The same goes for a lecture. Write only the words that contain important meaning for the lecture.

Note Taking Word types you usually don’t need to write: Pronouns – our, your, my, he Helping verbs – be, have, do Determiners/articles – a/an, the, this, these Prepositions – in, at, under, behind Conjunctions – and, but, so
