6 A Brief History In 1519, Spanish conquistadors claimed Nevada. In September of 1826, Jedediah Smith led his party were the first white men to enter Nevada. In 1846, the Donnor Party tragedy took place when, after being trapped in the snowy Sierra Nevada Mountains, they had to resort to cannibalism to survive. In 1864, Nevada finally became a state. Over a century later, in 1994, the MGM Grand Hotel was built in Las Vegas.

7 Interesting Facts Nevada became the 36 th state in 1864. Reno was founded on May 9, 1968. From 1909 to 1931, gambling was illegal in Nevada. This hurt the economy pretty badly. There was an elephant named Bertha that entertained guests at the Nugget Casino in Sparks. In 1960, there were 16,067 slot machines in Nevada. In 1999 there were 205,726 of them!
