North Korea launched surprise attack in June 1950 South Korea’s Capital – Seoul – fell in 4 days

United Nations forces stop the attack briefly North Korea pushes the U.N. forces to edge of South Korea

U.S. troops become involved heavily and under General MacArthur make a daring landing in Inchon

Surprise tactic works and the North Koreans are pushed back quickly

Americans were warned to stay away from the Yalu region, or risk an all out war with China and the Soviet Union

MacArthur believed the Chinese were bluffing and kept going- bringing the Chinese and Soviets into the war….oops!

Truman fired MacArthur for not listening and for sending a letter to a Congress- man criticizing Truman’s decision making abilities.

After a see-saw battle, the war finally ended in July 1953 at the 38 th Parallel and a more than 2 mile demilitarized zone.
