4. Each Burris High School student is required to take a “full load” of classes each semester Full load= 6 classes per semester = 12 classes per year

5. 12 classes X 4 years of high school =48 total classes Grand total of 48 credits possible

6. Core 40 Diploma 45 semester credits Required by Indiana state colleges and universities for regular admission Considered College Prep Curriculum

7. Language Arts8 credits in Literature, Composition, and Speech Mathematics6 credits in Alg.I, Geometry, Alg.II-- Must include Alg II Science6 credits 2 Biology (required course) 2 Chemistry (recommended course) 2 Physics (recommended course) Core 40

8. Social Studies6 credits 2 U.S. History 2 World History & Civilization 1 U.S. Government 1 Economics Health1 credit (1 semester) P. E.2 credits (2 semesters)

9. Core 40 8 credits from the preceding slides or the following subjects: World Languages Arts Career Area, including Journalism, Television Broadcasting, Family and Consumer Sciences 2 or 4 more credits from any available courses

10. Core 40 with Academic Honors 47 semester credits Recognized as Honors Track by colleges and universities Must earn “C” or above in courses Must have gpa of 3.0 (“B”) or above

11. 13. Core 40 with Academic Honors World Languages Must include: 6 credits in one language OR 4 credits in one language and 4 credits in another Fine Arts2 credits Choices include: Band, Orchestra, Choir, Photography and Studio Art classes

Core 40 with Academic Honors Complete one of the following: Two Advanced Placement courses (2 credits each=4 credits) and the corresponding AP exams Academic, transferable dual credit high school/college classes resulting in 6 college credits (College classes are usually 3 credits each) One AP course/exam (2 credits) and one dual credit college course Score 1200 or higher on combined SAT critical reading and math--will likely be modified with writing section added Score 26 composite ACT score

15. Core 40 with Technical Honors 47 semester credits This new diploma option began with the Class of 2010 Must earn “C” or above in courses Must have gpa of 3.0 (“B”) or above

18. Core 40 with Technical Honors Diploma Complete a career-technical program resulting in 8-10 credits Career Pathway available at Burris: Broadcast Journalism Mrs. Ahlersmeyer’s & Mr. Shears’ classes are the foundation for this technical track

Core 40 with Technical Honors Sequence of elective courses needed 9 th grade: Photography and Journalism 10 th grade: Yearbook, Newspaper, or TV Broadcasting 11 th grade: Yearbook, Newspaper, or TV Broadcasting 12 th grade: BSU Telecommunication Department classes for dual credit (TCOM 101 and TCOM 206, 207, 208)

20. Core 40 with Technical Honors Diploma A. Take three specific WorkKey assessments and score at a designated level B. Earn six dual high school/college credits in a technical area C. Complete either the Professional Career Internship course or a Coop Course D. Complete an industry-based work experience E. Earn a state-approved industry-recognized certification Also, must complete 2 of the following—one of which must be A or B:

21. More Important Things to Remember… 6 classes per semester + lunch Some classes have prerequisite classes or grade requirements Some classes are year-long

22. More Important Things … Independent study, 1 Ball State class optional during Junior year (semester) Independent Study, Internship, 2 Ball State classes optional during Senior year (semester) ALL OF THE ABOVE require a 3.0 gpa

23. Some colleges may require at least two years of a world language and extra math credits for admission, regardless of diploma type

24. To request a class from the Indiana Academy, two teacher recommendations will be required Choose one teacher--closest to the subject area of the Academy class-- and one math or English teacher to complete a recommendation form on your behalf Teachers will give recs to Mrs. Maugherman

25. Still More Important Things… Come to the Counseling Center with any questions or concerns Know the diploma you are working towards and keep track of your progress Four Year Plans will be done individually with each student during Freshman year

Check homework—some students may need to do more at-home studying Set a consistent time and space for studying Check progress frequently—use Powerschool Maintain contact with teachers Consider tutors—some students may need extra help with more rigorous coursework Review and help your child choose classes—your approval will be required in order for us to accept his or her course requests Role of Parents
