2 GLOBALIZATION: Process by which national economies, politics, cultures, and societies become integrated with other nations around the world Creates interdependence: countries relying on each other for goods, resources, knowledge, & labor Led to the creation of international organizations & treaties to connect people

3 CULTURAL & INTELLECTUAL CHANGES:
Changes have occurred throughout the world that deal with 3 different areas: 1. Satellites 2. Television 3. Computers

4 SATELLITES: By 2000, artificial satellites had changed global communication Used for 3 reasons: 1. communications (television, telephone) 2. observation (provides data, weather forecasts, military planners) 3. navigation (give precise locations to ship captains)

5 TELEVISION: Allowed people all over the world to tune in and connect with other people Brought news that was happening at that moment into peoples’ living rooms and allowed them to view things first hand Provided opportunities for people to see political leaders for the first time Showed poverty, starvation, & death Provided entertainment

6 COMPUTERS: Introduced the “Information Age”
Completely changed the world Introduced the “Information Age” Run businesses & power plants, help with research, allow for global communications 1970’s: creation of the Internet By 2010, 1/3 of world’s population had access to the Internet Helped shape life in developing nations by connecting them to a world of new ideas & info

7 GLOBAL & POLITICAL CONNECTIONS:
Global & political connections allows for countries to come together to solve international problems that face the world Includes 3 important organizations: 1. United Nations 2. OPEC 3. World Trade Organization

8 UNITED NATIONS: International peacekeeping organization
1945 (created): 50 countries 2009: 192 countries Deals with: Economic & social development Human rights Humanitarian aid International law

9 ORGANIZATION OF PETROLEUM (OPEC):
Oil provides global importance Largest oil suppliers: Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iran, Iraq Goal: to end the power of western oil companies & determine oil production prices Middle Eastern OPEC members used oil as a weapon, which resulted in a recession

10 WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION (WTO):
Created in 1995 Goals: set up global rules to ensure that trade followed slowly and freely Opposes tariffs (taxes) that protect a country’s home against international competition

11 GLOBAL TRADE ORGANIZATIONS & TREATIES:
Can connect people & nations around the world Goals: supporting development, settling economic issues, and promoting free trade European Union (EU): helps boost trade Provides greater variety of goods and services
