February 8, 2012 At the end of the day, you will be able to solve quadratic equations with imaginary solutions. Warm-up: Correct HW 6.2 14. x = -8, 326. x = -1/2, -3/266. 5i√2 16.X = 5, -528. x = -8/3, -2/367. 2i√3 18. X = -6, 330. x = 2, 468. 4i√3 20.X = 0, 5/363. 2√2 22. X = 664. 2√5 24. X = -2, 1/465. 3√3 QUIZ 6.2 Monday/Tuesday!

Lesson 5.9c Imaginary Solutions Solving quadratics of the form ax 2 + c = 0 Solve x 2 + 4 = 0 Now we can! Imaginary numbers were created to simplify problems like this! “i” is the letter that represents an imaginary # i = -1 - 4 - 4 x 2 = -4 √ √ Hold up! Can we take a square root of a negative number? x = ±√4 · √-1 x = ± 2i √

Example: 2x 2 + 16 = 0 What are our steps? - 16 - 16 2x 2 = -16 2 2 x 2 = -8 1. Subtract 16 to both sides 2. Divide both sides by 2 3. Square root both sides √ √ **Don’t forget + and - ** x = ±√-8 x = ±√8·√-1 **Don’t forget i = √-1 ** x = ±2i√2 HW 5.9c: Pg. 274 #49-55all
