ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Goals: At the completion of this lesson, students will better understand the concept of culture and that there are a vast amount of cultures throughout the world not just the ones they are exposed to daily. Students will also be able to discuss what distinguishes cultures from one another. Objectives: Students will be able to define a culture. Students will be able to discuss the defining characteristics of a culture. Students will be able to discuss, with competence, a specific culture. Students will be able to classify cultures. Students will be able to determine the differences. Students will learn to value their culture and others. Students will value the differences that make up unique cultures.

4. ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Rationale: Students need to be introduced to a lesson on culture because they are members of a global community. If they have a background studying different cultures they won’t experience culture shock when they are exposed to experiences that are different than they are accustomed to. Living in a global community, students will be working with people from many different walks of life. Standards: s tate – Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards 18.B.1b Identify major social institutions in the community. 18.A.1 Identify folklore from different cultures which became part of the heritage of the United States. National – NCSS Themes Social studies programs should include experiences that provide for the study of people, places, and environments Social studies programs should include experiences that provide for the study of individual development and identity.

6. Intrapersonal Students will begin their study on world cultures by writing a reflective journal about who they are based upon their cultural background. They should discuss their heritage, family life, and religious practice if they feel comfortable discussing that. They should also write about how they feel their culture has affected their perception of the world. Materials Needed Reflective journal

8. Logical/Mathematical For this part of the lesson, students will complete a worksheet that asks them to answer questions about themselves that will better determine their culture. They will work on the worksheet independently, and after they have completed the worksheet they will get into groups of 4 and compare and discuss their answers. They should consider how their different answers reflect their unique cultures. 10. Visual/Spatial For this part of the lesson students will be asked to participate in brown bag show and tell. They will need to bring in three items that represent who they are. Each student will take turns showing their items and describing what these items mean to them. They will need to discuss how they are used and their cultural significance. They will then be asked to complete a collage that includes more things that represent their life. It could include foods they eat, traditions, music, and family structure. 12. Interpersonal Students will be grouped into groups of four and assigned a culture. They will then brainstorm a way to present this culture to the class. They can prepare a signature dish, write a play, make a PowerPoint, or anything that they can come up with. The important part of this lesson is how well they work together and how creatively they represent this culture. Once they have been grouped and given a culture, they will be allowed a class period to work together and research. The following day they will present their culture. Materials Needed Computers

14. Musical/Rhythmic For this part of the lesson, we’ll watch the video Stand By Me (on youtube) that highlights multiple different styles of world music. While they are listening to the song they should be taking notes about what different sounds they were hearing and what culture they think it would belong to. 16. Body/Kinesthetic Students will be asked to participate in playing several different games that are traditionally played by children from different cultures all over the world. We will play Lizeth Diarte from Mexico, Marbles from Turkey, Kelereng from Indonesia, and Ji-Yun Park from Korea. Playing these games will let students see how children from other parts of the world entertain themselves compared to the traditional games that American students play. 17. Naturalistic

18. Naturalistic For the conclusion of this lesson students will be taken to watch a play put on by the Chicago Play Touring Theater’s production of “Do the Write Thing”. It is a play that is written by local students and deals with issues that are part of cultural identity like racism and family. The Chicago Play Touring Theater is child based and would be approved by parents for students to participate. After watching the play, students will answer questions posed by the teacher to reinforce the issues brought up in the play.

19. Verbal/Linguistic

20. Verbal/Linguistic Students will be assigned a country, and they will be responsible for completing a wiki space webpage about that country and the cultures that are included within it. It needs to be 6 paragraphs long and each paragraph needs to be at least 6 sentences long. They will need to include pictures that are germane to the what they are discussing. Also there should be a video related to their topic embedded within it, and links that are related to the topic. Students will be graded on the information included and the creativity they used when constructing it. They will have three class periods to complete it. Materials Needed Computers

21. ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Visual Learning and Assessment: Students will be graded based on the their group project and individual wikispace. They will also be graded based upon participation and respectful behavior towards classmates during discussions on their individual cultures.
