2
Excretory System Any system that eliminates wastes
3
Included in excretory system are: Digestive-water and undigested food out Respiratory- carbon dioxide and water out Skin-sweat and salts out Urinary-water, metabolic wastes and salts out
4
Urinary System: Function It filters your blood and removes wastes produced by your cells Fluid levels in the body are also maintained by the urinary system
5
Organs: Kidneys (2) Filters all the blood in your body every 5 minutes Blood enters the kidney, then excess sugars, salts, and wastes are removed Purified blood is returned to the circulatory system
7
Cross-section of a human kidney
8
Organs: Ureter Water, salts, and other wastes flow from the kidneys to the bladder through the ureters. Ureters
9
Organs: Bladder Excess waste and water are stored in the bladder About 1 L of urine is produced each day Bladder
10
Organs: Urethra Water exits the body through a tube called the urethra Urethra
11
Urinary System: Problems When kidneys don’t filter wastes, the body is slowly poisoned. High levels of glucose (sugar) can signal diabetes. Dialysis: a machine that can do the job of a broken or missing kidney. It will filter the blood.

Integumentary System Notes
14
Functions of skin Protection –Cushions and insulates and is waterproof –Protects from chemicals, heat, cold, bacteria –Screens UV Synthesizes vitamin D with UV Regulates body heat Prevents unnecessary water loss Sensory reception (nerve endings)
15
Disorders of the integumentary system Burns –Threat to life Catastrophic loss of body fluids Dehydration and fatal circulatory shock Infection –Types First degree – epidermis: redness (e.g. sunburn) Second degree – epidermis and upper dermis: blister Third degree - full thickness Infections Skin cancer
16
Burns First-degree (epidermis only; redness) Second-degree (epidermis and dermis, with blistering) Third-degree (full thickness, destroying epidermis, dermis, often part of hypodermis)
