Healthy Living
2
Healthy body Healthy diet + physical activity= Healthy body
3
Diet is the usual food and drink that each person consumes and is a very important part of health.
A balanced diet means eating the right types of food in the right amounts so that the body gets the nutrients it needs. Carbohydrates proteins Fats Fiber vitamins & minerals Water
4
Energy To maintain minimum essential life functions is known as basal metabolic rate, BMR. Humans require energy to function Obtain energy from food they consume Measured in Calories. The amount of calories needed depends on body weight, age, activity levels, and if male or female
5
Metabolism Metabolism= chemical reactions involved in storing food molecules and converting food molecules into energy. Digestion + oxygen energy
6
Weight If you consume to many calories the excess is stored and you gain weight You want the energy in= energy out, so you don’t gain weight.
7
How to burn food Oxygen must be supplied to cells, and carbon dioxide released. Heart/lungs deliver oxygen to all the organs, tissues and cells. Energy must be transferred for the organs, and cells to work. Lungs take in oxygen for the combustion of food
8
Regular Exercise Important to maintain a healthy heart, lungs, muscle tone, bone strength. Increase heart rate provides more oxygen for the body to use.
9
Overall Basal Metabolic Rate
60 % of all energy used by the body 30% account of daily physical activities (walking and moving) 10% of the energy used by the body to digest and process food.
10
Calculate BMR
11
So what should my diet look like?
Draw a picture of a plate include how much you think should be fruits, vegetables, protein (meat), and grains.
13
Why do we need a balanced diet?
Food Group % needed in your diet. Why you need it. To regulate digestion and elimination of faecal matter. Fiber 15% Protects organs in your body and is an energy store. Fats 7% Carbohydrates 33% Releases energy for the body. Proteins 12% Build and repair muscle, tissue, etc. Needed for healthy body functioning. For Example: Vitamin A is needed for new cell growth, healthy skin, hair, and tissues, and vision in dim light. Vitamins and Minerals 33%
14
Poor Nutrition Too much fat / clogs arteries; obesity; heart disease
Too much salt / high blood pressure (hypertension) Too much sugar / type II diabetes (insulin/regulate blood sugar) Too little vitamins & minerals / problems like anemia, weak immune system
15
You are much more likely to kill yourself with your
lifestyle choices than to have someone else kill you! The typical American diet is too high in saturated fat, sodium, and sugar and too low in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, calcium, and fiber.
