Welcome to Physical Science CHEM 101 With Dr. Anita Brown Welcome to OR Welcome Back to Salisbury University NOTE: this course is equivalent to PHYS 101 and will have a “large” physics content

Everything is NOT as it appears! We must be careful not to rely on assumptions, or even what we think we see! Such actions can be tragic (juries, etc.) Understanding the world around us will often require us to imagine and truly understand that which we cannot see with our “naked” eyes….

My Goal for this Course Help you learn and really understand some fundamentals of physical science Help you learn to apply these fundamentals so that you may approach real problems NOTE: my goal is NOT to help you memorize information, formulas, how to get a number without an understanding of the phenomena involved NOTE: Be prepared, this is a college-level science course…it should not, and likely will not be a repeat of what you might have done in high school

My Goal for This Course/Your University Education  To help you understand the concepts…not just memorize the ways to solve 50 different problem types…my quizzes and exams will attempt to “force” you to do this  You must learn and use problem solving skills…after all, this is what you’ll need in the real world  This is an important goal of a college education – preparing you to think for yourself and solve problems on your own – part of University’s mission is to make you life-long learners…not for you to memorize enough to pass this class and a few days later to not be able to do 95% of what you could on an exam

Tips for Studying Doing homework and 5 hours of studying prior to exam, probably NOT enough If you are a full-time student, then your academics is your job! You should devote AT LEAST 40 hrs/week then to your studies. Review/study prior to each class

Tips for studying in science Looking at notes/problems and saying, “OK, I see, I get it…” is probably not enough to do well on exams CHEM 122 story

GETTING HELP My office hours (on syllabus and web) or email or appointment My problem session Help Sessions from each instructor, time & location posted on web “Quiet time” in lab

GETTING HELP My job is to guide you through this course and this process Try to give clear explanations and examples in class Try to get YOU thinking concepts through I WILL NOT show you every possible problem… Be there to help you when you’ve taken a look at concepts and examples on your own

Understanding This Course Sign Responsibility Sheet from Syllabus

Physical Science is Important to YOU!! Central to life? Affects us constantly!! –Motion: autos, sports –How our bodies function –Use and development of medicines –Technology that we rely on

Always try to keep in mind Science is FUN!!
