Effective Grading Practices Practice (Formatives): These assessments are given as part of the instructional process, and they provide information needed to adjust teaching and learning while they are happening Retakes may be accepted or required by the teacher until proficiency is met or until the summative assessment has been given Counts as 30% of overall grade Types of Practice (Formatives): some homework, daily quizzes, unit quizzes, basic skills

Effective Grading Practices Summative Assessments: These assessments are given periodically to determine at a particular point in time what students know and are able to do Summative assessments are an independent summary of the learning and retakes are not permitted Counts as 70% of the overall grade Types of Summative Assessments: unit tests, math mate tests, projects

Effective Grading Practices Homework: Homework is given as part of the instructional process, and it provides information needed to adjust teaching and learning while they are happening Retakes may be accepted or required by the teacher until proficiency is met or until the summative assessment has been given Counts as 0% of overall grade

Practice Retakes (Formatives) At teacher discretion Retakes must be completed on their own time (ELO), not during class time All prior homework must be completed and turned in before a student can retake a formative Student must fix and clarify (make corrections) on the original formative and turned in with evidence of learning Students must get a parent signature on the original formative before a retake Retakes have to be completed before the unit summative assessment Extra Credit will not be offered
