The Prepositional Phrase A preposition is usually followed by at least one noun or pronoun. This noun is called the object of the preposition. The preposition, its object, and the object’s modifiers make up a prepositional phrase. Examples: He poured gravy over the mashed potatoes. He hid inside his closet.
