During the Iron Age, the Gauls lived in France, which was called Gaul.

After the Romans invaded Gaul, they created the Galo-Roman culture. The Pont du Gard is one of the most iconic monuments of the Romano-Galish culture. It has been built to bring water to the city of Nîmes.

The first castles were built with wood. Later, they were built with stones.

From the 10 th to the 12 th century, churches were built in the Romanesque style, with round arches.

From the 12 th to the 15 th century, the style changed to the Gothic art. The churches were bigger, brighter and more decorated.

Joan of Arc During the Hundred Years War (1337-1453), the young Joan of Arc tried to defend France against the British army. She was captured in Compiègne then burnt to death in Rouen in 1432.

Louis XIV (1643-1715) His nickname was “Roi Soleil” (“Sun King”). He had an absolute power over France. He built the palace of Versailles.

The French Revolution The French Revolution started on the 14th of July 1789 with the attack of the Bastille by the people of Paris. The king was beheaded in 1793.

World War I and II 1914-1918 : Most of the battles of the First World War happened in Northern France. It caused a total of 9 millions deaths. 1935-1945 : A lot of French Jews were deported to Poland, in Auschwitz for example.
