Wireless Upgrade to Aruba – 850 APs on main campus – 535 in Housing residences – Will be installing 802.11n in new buildings Coming – Eduroam – Traffic shaping – Network Address Translation (NAT) – Additional APs in high use areas (DC, LIB, SLC) Note existing coverage in most lecture rooms designed for light usage only. – Full coverage in lecture rooms average $50 per seat (802.11a/b/g/n AP, cabling, conduit, etc)

Network Standards Discussed at CNAG and CTAG For campus consistency Telecommunications Room (TR) standards for new buildings Device naming 1-to-1 patch cabling POE switches Routed (layer 3) connections to new buildings

Voice over IP (VoIP) Requires Power over Ethernet (POE) switches Used in all new buildings (e.g. RAC, Pharmacy) approximately 500 VoIP phones installed to date Hoping to offer zero/low cost self serve VoIP phone moves in areas with all jacks live POE (new buildings) – Requires some development to track locations for E911.

Network Upgrades Vendor end of support network gear upgraded across campus over past 3 years. Central and Faculty funds. Academic support buildings upgrading to Power over Ethernet, all jacks live. – approximately $225,000 over 3 years. Procurve 2610-48-PWR - 48 port 10/100 POE switch $1976.00

Network Service Provisioning Project underway to review how wired service is offered. Recognition that wireless is self serve and convenient. Client request and manual steps required to enable wired service.

Availability Redundant: – Core routers – Border routers – Wireless controllers – DHCP/DNS – Internet Service Providers (ISPs) – Machine room network infrastructure IST has staff on call 7x24 – Paid annual stipend, plus overtime hours

Network Management IST responsible for: – Wireless – Core/border – Academic support, Ancillaries, Residence Networks[1] – AHS, ES Math, CS, Eng, Science, Arts, responsible for wired network service within their respective areas. Standardized equipment, practices, management software [1] – Framework document permits operational activities to be delegated to local IT staff, to support their activities as efficiently as possible.Framework document
