1 Welcome! Powering up for a Heroic Year in First Grade!

2 Attendance & Absences Homeroom begins at 7:40. The tardy bell rings at 8:10. A successful school experience is the responsibility of the child, parent, and teacher. Your child’s progress is influenced to a great extent by daily participation. Regular attendance, without tardiness is a key! Parents MUST send a written excuse explaining why your child was absent. No email excuses will be accepted. All excuses must be sent within 3 days. Prior approval for absence forms are in the Front office. Students should not arrive on campus before 7:20. No Check-outs after 2:45 Dismissal begins at 3:00.

3 Breakfast/Lunch Breakfast will be served from 7:35 to 8:00. There will be no breakfast served after 8:00. Please refrain from visiting your child at lunch during the first two weeks of school as procedures are being established. You can refer to the lunch schedules provided in the handbook. Lunch are as follows: Stewart Rm. 11 10:50-11:20Carstarphen Rm. 12 10:50-11:20 Reese Rm. 14 10:55-11:20Grimsley Rm. 15 10:55-11:20 Fast food must be in a brown bag or lunchbox

4 Fieldtrips Your child is expected to attend all field trips that are planned throughout the school year. If you have a financial situation that may prevent your child from attending the trip please let us know. No siblings will be allowed on field trips. All chaperones MUST complete a Background Check Request form or you will not be able to attend a field trip.

5 Classroom Instruction Your child will have several assignments during the school day. Your child is expected to work independently and will have assignments in each subject. Spelling Test will be given every Friday. You will receive the spelling words on the homework sheet on Mondays. Students are responsible for checking their work and making sure all directions have been followed. Neat handwriting is very important. Please make sure your child practice at home.

6 Grading Scale A= 90-100 B=80-89 C=70-79 D=60-69 F=59-0 Students must maintain a 65 average to be promoted to the next grade.

7 Homework Reading and Math are two important subjects in 1 st grade. Please make sure your child does their reading and math homework daily, their homework is a reinforcement of what is being taught in class. Your child will receive a homework sheet every Monday. Math homework will be assigned Monday-Thursday. Math Drills will be sent home, and checked weekly. Reading/Spelling/Writing homework will be assigned nightly too. Please check your child’s communication folder nightly to make sure all assignments have been completed with accuracy. Please assist your child with organization by removing papers that have been place on the “Keep at Home” side of his or her communication folder. Each nine weeks we will send home a list of sight words that your child will be expected to learn by the end of the nine weeks. Please put this list in a safe place and work with your child daily so they can learn these words. They will be tested on these words at the end of the nine weeks.

8 Reading/Math Logs Conduct Sheets Students are required to read 20 minutes every night. Please remember to sign reading and math logs daily and your child conduct sheet. If your child comes home with a yellow or red mark on their conduct sheet that means they did not have a Great day. Please talk to them about the importance of obeying the teacher and following directions!

9 Student Work Samples Each nine week period your child will have a minimum of 9 daily grades and 4 test grades in reading, language arts, math, science and social studies. Progress Reports will be sent home weekly. Please sign and return the progress report on the next day. Signed papers will be sent home bi-weekly. It is important that you review their sign papers with your child, sign the envelope, and return the envelope and papers to school the next day. If your child does not return their signed papers, the student will not receive any more signed papers. You can schedule a conference to discuss their grades for any questions or concerns.

10 Classroom Rules Students are expected to follow classroom rules. Failure to do so will result in a drop in their conduct grade. Conduct grades will be sent home daily. A copy of the first grade discipline plan will be included in your child’s packet. Please read and carefully, sign and return the notice of receipt.

11 Power Tips for Success Tips: Tip 1- Following directions the first time they are given. Tip 2- Talking only at appropriate times. Tip 3- Keep your hands, feet, and other objects to yourself. Tip 4- Respect others and their personal property. Tip 5- Be prepared, stay on task and complete assignments everyday. Digest all of this for a Super Year in First Grade!!

12 Conferences Conferences are requested as needed by parents or teacher to discuss your child’s academic progress and/or behavior. Conferences are scheduled on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.

13 Juice/Popcorn Juice and snack will be sold daily. The cost is $0.50 each. On Fridays pickle and popcorn will sold also. Pickles are $0.50 and Popcorn $1.00 Your child may bring their own juice or snack from home.

14 Car Pool Please make sure your sign with your child’s name on it is visible in your car window. Please pull all the way to the crosswalk when dropping off or picking up your child. Please do not use cell phones while in the car pool lane.

15 Uniforms Specific uniform guidelines will be enforced. Your child may wear White, Gold, Navy blue collar shirts with Khaki or navy blue bottoms. Belts should be worn and shirts should be tucked into your child bottoms.
