3. Philosophy As first grade teachers, we believe that each and every child is a UNIQUE individual who needs love, compassion, and guidance. We hope to provide a safe and caring environment for children to learn and achieve their highest goals. We know that through parent and teacher partnership all children are capable of being successful.

4. 5. Behavioral Expectations n “How is your day?” n On Fridays students are given a treasure box item when they have earned 5 green or blue dots. n They are expected to show respect to one another and to all adults. If there is a behavior problem we will inform you and work together to keep it a positive learning environment for all students.

6. Grade level Planner n Every student has received a planner. In this planner, we hope to keep an open communication with you as parents. We will have students write important reminders in it. Please check your childs’ planner at night.

8. Title I School-Parent Compact Each school receiving funds under Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) must develop a written school-parent compact. This compact is part of the school’s written parental involvement policy. It outlines how the school staff, parents, and students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement. Signing this compact means the school and parents will build a partnership to help children achieve the State’s high standards.

Provide high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that enables the participating children to meet the State’s student academic achievement standards. 2. Hold parent-teacher conferences during which we will discuss your child’s achievements and goals.

11. As parents, you can support your child’s learning in the following ways: n Monitor attendance n Read every night for 15 minutes n Volunteer in your child’s classroom n Participate in decisions relating to your child’s education n Promote positive use of your child’s extracurricular time. n Stay informed about your child’s education and communicating with the school by reading all notices from the school or the school district. n Serve, to the extent possible, on policy advisory groups.

AS A OF ROANOKE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, I AGREE TO… AS A TEACHER OF ROANOKE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, I AGREE TO… n Provide high quality instruction in a way that will motivate and encourage all children. n Attend and implement staff development regarding best teaching practices. n Hold parent-teacher conferences at least twice per school year, and be accessible by phone, e-mail, and school planner for consultations regarding the child’s achievement. n Provide parents with frequent reports on their children’s progress, including 3-week progress reports, 6-week report cards, and on-going assessment of daily work. n Provide parents with opportunities to volunteer and participate in their child’s classroom and observe classroom activities.

AS A PARENT OF ROANOKE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, WE ASK THAT YOU AGREE TO… n Make sure my child is rested, on time, and prepared for school each day. n Know how my child is doing in school by communicating with teachers by planner, phone, or e-mail. n Monitor my child’s progress and make sure study time is in a quiet place. n Limit TV viewing and read together daily with my child. n Be an active participant in my child’s education.

17. Student Homework n Students will receive a new homework sheet in their composition notebook every Monday. n Homework will be due on Fridays. n There will be different spelling word activities and math activities to be completed daily. n Spelling tests will be given every Friday. n Students will be bringing home a (green) Guided Reading folder daily. They are expected to read the books and complete any activity that has been provided. We hope to have all students reading at least 20 minutes a night. n Students will also have a (purple) Poetry Folder. In here you will find a weekly poem. We just ask that you read and review this poem with your child. The poems are connected to their phonics lesson and their spelling words for the week.

21. Lunch & Birthday’s n There is a special “Parent Picnic” table located in our Dining room by the windows. We ask that you only eat with your child because of the many food allergies we have on campus. n Birthday treats can be shared at recess or at the end of the school day. n Snacks provided by the class must follow state guidelines.

22. n n HOV- For families that car pool, we have an HOV lane. You need a white car tag and a yellow car tag for each child being picked up. Please make sure your kiddo knows they are an HOV rider. n n Walkers and Bike riders- If you would like to pick your child up from the walker area, you may meet them with a yellow car tag at the Kindergarten hallway door. n n Unsupervised walkers and bike riders will be dismissed and escorted across the street by a staff member. 23. If ride changes need to be made or you need to pick up your child early for an appointment we ask that you notify the office before 2:15. Ride changes can not be made after this time. Ride Changes

24. Bus Riders For the safety of all, it is important that students follow the expectations and procedures established by the bus drivers. Students who have more than three bus infractions will be removed from the bus and alternative transportation will need to be provided by the family.

25. Grades, Progress Reports and Report Cards n n Electronic distribution of grade reports. Let the office know if a printed copy is needed. n n E-school accounts are available for viewing students grades.

26. Attendance n Texas state law requires students be in attendance 90% of the entire school day. n If your child is absent, please send a note to school with your child. n 5 tardies are equivalent to 1 unexcused absence.
