1 The Appalachian Project Beck Urban Academy Steve Schack, Teresa Stonerock, Mary Tinsley, Carolyn Cutler Osborne

2 Purposes One purpose of our project was to demonstrate to pre-service teachers how to teach about a culture using the arts (music, visual arts, dance, and drama) Another purpose of our project was to introduce students at Beck to Appalachian culture.

3 Beck Urban Academy Beck is part of the Columbus Public Schools It has a high rate of poverty Because it is located on the south side of Columbus, Beck serves Appalachian children and their families

4 Components of the project: Music Taught songs Used songs as cultural artifacts Demonstrated instruments—fiddle, banjo, guitar, dulcimer Had a live bluegrass band for the dance Made simple working dulcimers

5 Art Made simple block quilt Students drew pictures to represent their thinking about culture Students decorated their dulcimers

6 Drama and Dance Did reader’s theater version of a Jack tale Did process drama to explore alternate endings of the Jack tale Held a square dance as the culminating event of the project
