The Appalachian Project Beck Urban Academy Steve Schack, Teresa Stonerock, Mary Tinsley, Carolyn Cutler Osborne

Purposes One purpose of our project was to demonstrate to pre-service teachers how to teach about a culture using the arts (music, visual arts, dance, and drama) Another purpose of our project was to introduce students at Beck to Appalachian culture.

Beck Urban Academy Beck is part of the Columbus Public Schools It has a high rate of poverty Because it is located on the south side of Columbus, Beck serves Appalachian children and their families

Components of the project: Music Taught songs Used songs as cultural artifacts Demonstrated instruments—fiddle, banjo, guitar, dulcimer Had a live bluegrass band for the dance Made simple working dulcimers

Art Made simple block quilt Students drew pictures to represent their thinking about culture Students decorated their dulcimers

Drama and Dance Did reader’s theater version of a Jack tale Did process drama to explore alternate endings of the Jack tale Held a square dance as the culminating event of the project
