1 So what does it mean? The impact of winning a National Teaching Fellowship February 2007 Jo Webb, jwebb@dmu.ac.uk

2 First of all a bit of background… NTFS started in 2001- 20 a year England and Northern Ireland Now 50 Fellowships a year –2004 and 2005 3 categories Experienced staff / Rising stars / Learning support staff Goal to raise profile and esteem of teaching and learning support in RAE-drive HE culture Mirrors elite schemes in US (Carnegie), New Zealand and Australia Up to 3 candidates nominated by institution DMU has 8 NTFs

3 Applications process – NTF 2005 5 page statement describing: Teaching philosophy Ability to influence learners, including colleagues, to achieve their relevant goals Ability to influence and inspire colleagues in their professional practice in relation to learning, teaching and assessment Track record of influencing positively the national community of practice in higher education in relation to learning, teaching and assessment Ability to demonstrate a reflective approach to teaching and / or the support of learning

4 Evidence base - NTFS Existing material –Happy file –Teaching feedback forms Supporting statements from: –Library staff –Faculties (Deans, academic colleagues) –Central departments –Wider profession

5 Application process - continued At DMU –2 page institutional citation (with supporting quotes) –Track record and Indicative Plan for Expenditure (no longer the case) –Facilitated by Academic Professional Development Unit –Approved by PVC Academic –Mentored through application process Application is assessed by two readers and then a panel Deadline end of February. Results late June

7 NTFS Project Reading for a degree Activities –Literature search (started) –Conferences (attend and organise) –Survey –Buy-in research assistant –(initial plan to buy-out time) Links with –English Subject Centre –Libraries and Information East Midlands –DMU academics (range of subjects)

8 Other activities Within DMU library –Series of L&T staff development events –Learning Teaching and Assessment Strategy –New Learning Zone Work with other Teacher Fellows Study tours Joint conferences with Northampton –One-day conference on peer support in L&T in June 2006 –Another event planned in June 2007
