New England Colonies 3 As the settlers began to move westward they infringed on Native American territory resulting in: – The Pequot Wars- clash between the Pequot tribe and the puritans caused the colonists to destroy crops and villages – King Phillips War- colonists established a government that they attempted to force the Native Americans to abide. (Resulted in raids by Native Americans and Villagers)

5. Middle Colonies 1 Settled by the Dutch (with the help of Henry Hudson) Land was claimed by the West India Company West India Company gave large tracts of land to anyone who would bring 50 new settlers to the area people who received this land became known as Patroons- who ran their estates as they wished

6. Middle Colonies 2 Swedish settlers were attracted by the fur trade They began building log cabins on the frontier In 1664 James Duke of York seized the land, claiming it for England, and renamed it New York

Middle Colonies 3 James was made the proprietor (owner) of the colony Proprietary colony- ownership of the land is granted to one person or group of people William Penn founded Pennsylvania as a home for his religious group- the Quakers – He named it Pennsylvania- Penns woods (to honor his father)

8. Southern Colonies 1 Thrived off the farming of tobacco Lord Baltimore established a colony to the safe practice of Roman Catholicism (bought what is today Maryland from the native Americans) Issued the Toleration act – guaranteeing all Christians the right to worship as they pleased

9. Southern Colonies 2 Humid weather and swampy land along the coast caused fever and malaria, immigration was slow at first Began Navel Stores which they could provide the English Navy with wood, tar, and turpentine Began growing indigo- a plant for producing blue dye

10. Southern Colonies 3 George was established by James Oglethorpe to create a buffer between the colonies and Spanish Florida It was Granted to many people in debt Strict laws were put in place such as: – How much land one person could own – Outlawing liquor – Outlawing the use of African Slaves
