4. COS440 Course Description COS 440 is an introduction to Data Communications and Computer Networking. Topics covered include the physical characteristics of communications networks, media, topology, and protocols. The course will include discussions of wide area networks as well as local area networks. The course will follow a layered approach as defined by the International Standards Organization (ISO) and will draw examples form the now ubiquitous Internet.

Programs and Papers  3-5 programs or papers will be assigned.  These will be evaluated on a scale of 0-10.  all programs or papers will account for 35 percent of the final grade.  Programs and papers will have a due date assigned. Those passed in after the due date will have 1 point deducted in the first week late and 2 points thereafter

Homeworks or assignments Assignments will be handed out for exercises from time to time These are to be passed in and will account for 20 percent of the final grade These exercises are due at class time and will not be accepted at any time following the class period at which they are due
