British sent 10,000 troops to the colonies to help settle disputes with the Native Americans Proclamation of 1763- no westward settlements! Tax colonists to pay for the expenses of the war Customs officers obtained writs of assistance (Official Documents) to search and seize smuggled goods without warning

Sugar Act- 1764- to lower tax on imported molasses British established special courts to hear smuggling cases which denied colonists the right to a jury trial Stamp Act- 1765- taxed all printed material in the colonies Samuel Adams- Sons of Liberty- burned effigies in protest

Colonists boycott printed goods Stamp Act Congress in NY- sent a petition to the King stating only colonial legislatures could tax colonists British merchants lost money- Parliament repealed the Stamp Act Parliament passes the Declaratory Act of 1766- they can legally tax and make decisions for the colonies

Townshend Acts- 1767- taxed imported goods at port of entry Colonists imposed any and all taxes enforced by Parliament/ continued boycotts and protests- only their own reps could tax them Women’s groups organized Daughters of Liberty to support boycotts-making their own goods to avoid importing British goods

Boston Massacre- used as propaganda by the Committee of Correspondence (Sam Adams) Tea Act- 1773- allowed companies to ship tea without paying taxes- under sold the colonists who lost profit Boston Tea Party- (Sam Adams) 1773- Boston Mass. Daughters of Liberty- burned their tea and marched in protest
